A psychiatrist with extensive experience helping people cope with depression will give a free public talk on the subject in the city next week.

The Irish Medical Times has issued a call for entries for this year’s Irish Healthcare Awards, which recognise and acknowledge originality, excellence, and innovation in the fields of education, pharmaceutical innovation, healthcare collaboration, and patient support, and apply to anyone working in acute and primary care, public health, the private sector and IT.

An urgent review of the conditions covered under the Long Term Illness scheme is being called for by Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony. The scheme, which is administered by the Health Service Executive, is designed to ensure that people who suffer from a number of medical conditions can avail of their medication under this scheme.

Speaking in advance of the Fine Gael FairCare public meeting to be held in Mullingar Park Hotel this Tuesday, March 30, local Senator Nicky McFadden said: “Over the past 10 years our health service has become a complete shambles with excessively long out-patient waiting lists and short notice operation cancellations just the tip of the iceberg.”

Patients in St Loman’s psychiatric hospital, Mullingar are living in “conditions belonging to another age” and the HSE must take urgent action to improve the situation.
